An adult can spray your clothes with permethrin (a chemical). Tuck your pants into your socks and your shirt into your pants so ticks cannot crawl into your clothes. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts while outside. There are many ways to protect yourself from being bitten by a tick! They like moist and humid (warm and wet) places to live ( environments or habitats). Often ticks are found in areas with trees, under leaves on the ground, around woodpiles or stonewalls, or around tall grass. Ticks like to live in or near areas with wood and grass. When ticks bite a person or an animal, the bacteria is transferred over to them and can cause a lot of health issues. They can carry diseases (bacteria) in their blood that can make people and other animals sick. They prefer blood from mammals (warm-blooded animals like deer or people) and birds, but they have also been found on reptiles and amphibians (like snakes or frogs). Ticks need to eat blood from an animal or a person to go through each growth ( life cycle). Most ticks have three stages of growth: larvae, nymph, and adult. In New Hampshire there are six types of ticks. There are about 899 different kinds ( species) of ticks in the world. Ticks are put into the same category as small spiders ( arachnids). The identification of ticks up to species level is much more complicated and requires more expertise. The various genera of hard ticks can easily be differentiated by a set of features unique to each genus: mouthparts, basis capituli, scutum, eyes, festoons, adanal, subanal and accessory anal plates, coxae and anal groove. The identification of ticks is mainly based on morphological features although the hosts on which they occur, the locality where they were found and their seasonal activity is taken into consideration. Identification and differential diagnosis The study of the seasonal occurrence of ticks is of major importance in the control of ticks and tick-borne diseases. Most ticks show seasonality in their life cycles adult ticks will become active and feed at the start of the rainy season. In soft ticks or Argasidae, the mouthparts are recessed ventrally except in the larval stage. Hard ticks or Ixodidae are characterized by the presence of a hard scutum or shield and mouthparts projecting forward which makes them visible from the dorsal side. There are three families of ticks although one family, Nuttallielidae comprises only one species.
